Every small business owner asks this question, and every agency has a self-interested answer. Here's the unspun version.
What each one actually is
Google Ads is a tap you can turn on and off. Money in → traffic out, immediately. SEO is a flywheel. Months of compounding effort → traffic out, slowly, but cheaply, and forever.
Start with ads if…
- You need leads in the next 30 days to keep payroll moving
- You have a clear, high-margin offer with strong unit economics ($300+ LTV minimum)
- Your competitors are running ads and dominating the SERP
Start with SEO if…
- You're a local service business in a competitive market — the local 3-pack is half the game
- Your buyers research for weeks before deciding
- You already have a healthy site and a working measurement stack
What most healthy small businesses actually do
Both. In sequence. Ads first to validate the offer and generate immediate revenue. Then plow some revenue into SEO to compound traffic over 6–18 months.
The single number that decides for you
Customer Lifetime Value. If your average customer is worth $200 and you have to pay $80 to acquire them, ads work. If they're worth $50, you'd better win them through SEO.
